5 a.m. is the final work on the program and is an improvisational piece by Ray Anderson. It is a series of fragments to be utilized by the performer to achieve various programmatic effects. Ray felt that after a long night of heavy thinking the audience might need to hear a simple tune, which is typical of his wonderful sense of humor. It begins with snoring, birds and rising major sevenths to signify dreams and ends with a musical depiction of waking up early, making coffee and whistling a simple melody over a 12 bar blues. Anderson's work contains both traditional and original elements influenced by both the New Orleans jazz tradition as well as the avant-garde work of Ornette Coleman and Archie Shepp.
