Cloud of Unknowing by Philip Schussler is a departure from his previously Spectral School motivated works, although the middle section still shows evidence of his sympathy for slowly evolving sounds. Cloud of Unknowing contains technically difficult material that is quick, aurally challenging and rhythmically complex. Loosely used isorhythmic cycles (a system of patterning rhythms over the course of a work developed by Trevor Wishart) and the subtle transformation from one overtone series to another provide coherence as well as an intellectual basis for the compositional process. Schussler’Äôs sparse writing and use of fragments hint at pointillism but his work seems equally influenced by his involvement with electronic and computer sound design.
