Eos(Aurora) by Ellen Lindquist is a single, long lyric gesture built using limited pitch and rhythmic material to realize the predawn. Murmurs of morning life in the form of 16th note pitch clusters marked sul ponticello are spread between long pedal-tone sections that rely on quarter-tone inflections. The pedal-tone sections eventually evolve into a four-note motive colored through the use of quarter-tone inflections. At the midpoint of Lindquist’Äôs piece, the murmurs also evolve into a full-fledged theme of startling strength and natural beauty. The piece continues to rise and expand until the last seven measures, which conclude as a reflective coda. From the mystic title based on ancient mythology to the aural sensuality based on half-step resolutions drawn from Middle Eastern music sources, from the direct language using limited pitch material to the single, unified gesture, Giacinto Scelsi seems a clear precursor to Lindquist’Äôs work.
