Owl Light by Gilda Lyons was inspired by the quality of half-light at dusk. The piece expresses elements of both day and night utilizing contrasting motives and textures. Three themes interact in various configurations. The first theme serves as framing material and is an arpeggiated quintal chord. The second and third themes are antithetical. The second is a bitonal theme based on tonal centers of B and G. The third theme is the African American hymn "Steal Away to Jesus" which Ms. Lyons slowly reveals over the course of this 5-minute work. This piece harkens to the work of neo-tonalists such as Judith Weir and John Taverner in its spare simplicity and use of simple harmonies.
