Moonlit Lake 2 a.m. by Canadian composer Shane Fage was the inspiration for the theme of this concert. This piece was written in 2001 and is a 12-tone work for violin and piano and inspired by a photograph of Moraine Lake in the Banff National Park by William Neill. The image was projected above the performers throughout the duration of the approximately 10 minute piece during the premier of this piece in Banff, but is not required for the performance of this work. Moonlit Lake, is highly atmospheric. Programmatic elements such as "wolf calls" are set within a piece that instructs the performer to play as if in a "transcendent dreamstate."(sic) All this might seem clichˆ©d except that the piece is extremely effective, using sustained pedal tones and an evocative tone row utilized in trichord configurations that allow Fage the room to achieve a series of haunting harmonic and sonic effects that complement the photograph beautifully. Fage's free use of the 12-tone method is reminiscent of Luigi Dallapiccola's Piccola Musica Notturna and Alban Berg’Äôs Lyric Suite.
